The Blind Assassin (Doubleday, 2000)
------by Margaret Atwood

The narrator, a woman forced into an unwanted marriage for the sake of her family's business, recounts the effects this has had on everyone involved, starting with her sister's driving off a bridge. Miller says the novel (1) is structurally perfect, further proof that Atwood, "the doyenne of Canadian literature," is also one of our greatest living writers, (2) is one of the few important studies of old age in world literature, and (3) is a major exploration of modern politics, history and female fulfillment.
